Creating 3-D printed ‘motion sculptures’ from 2-D videos | 19 September 2018
Provided by Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has often credited his success to spending countless hours studying his opponent’s movements on film. This understanding of movement is necessary for all living species, whether it’s figuring out what angle to throw a ball at, or perceiving the motion of predators and prey. But simple videos can’t actually give us the full picture.

Helping to improve medical image analysis with deep learning | IBM | 19 September 2018
-
Medical imaging creates tremendous amounts of data: many emergency room radiologists must examine as many as 200 cases each day, and some medical studies contain up to 3,000 images.
-
Each patient’s image collection can contain 250GB of data, ultimately creating collections across organizations that are petabytes in size.
-
Within IBM Research, we see potential in applying AI to help radiologists sift through this information, including imaging analysis from breast, liver, and lung exams.

Colon cancer is caused by bacteria and cell stress | Technical University Munich | 19 September 2018
Findings related to the development of colon cancer have been releassed by ressearcherrs from the ‘Technical University Munich’.
The researchers had wished to study
“the role of bacteria in the intestines in relation to the development of intestinal inflammation.”
“However, the surprising result for us was the discovery that bacteria, together with stress in cells, caused tumours (exclusively in the colon) and without the involvement of inflammation.”
As explained by Professor Dirk Haller from the Department of Nutrition and Immunology at the Weihenstephan Science Centre of the TUM.

I can’t sleep. What drugs can I (safely) take? | by Ric Day And Andrew Mclachlan, The Conversation | 19 September 2018
Opening paragraph:
‘If you’re having trouble sleeping, medicines shouldn’t be your first option. Exercise regularly, cut back on coffee (and other caffeinated drinks) after midday, eat less in the evening, ease up on “screen time” before, and in, bed, practise meditation and try to have a quiet, dark bedroom dedicated mostly to sleep.’

Customer Journeys Start With Smartphones, But Brands Still Don’t Get Mobile | August 2018
Excerpt:
‘Customers are not going to wait for brands to get the mobile journey right…they’ll move on and find someone else who gets them.’
This is an interesting read as pharma deliberate over digital innovations and how to improve patient relations. It’s nothing new to report that Smartphones and the varying apps customers have access to can tell marketers/companies a lot about their buyers/users/payers.
When considering the health apps that are available I find it a sensible idea to assume that patient journey’s, from a medical perspective, are an obvious place to start.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN PEER REVIEW | Written by Harriet Lacey | Editorial Administrator, European Medical Journal | 13 September
An important discussion topic and this article is a great read, please share!
Excerpt:
It is not enough to simply include more women, ethnic minority groups, and people from developing countries within the peer review system. For there to be true diversity, these groups need to be represented equally. When including these groups of individuals, their ability to review and to review well should be recognised and celebrated.

An Open Letter About The Opioid Crisis | migrainemantras | By Wanda | 4 September 2018
Excerpt:
‘There is another “opioid crisis” in America today. It is the crisis of patients being turned away because doctors are judged by insurance companies and legislators for prescribing such medications. It is the crisis of the side-lined, those whose lives are ruled by pain but are unable to treat it adequately. It is the patient who has chosen to take the “lesser” medication and now finds it being stigmatized as well.’
